Memorial Hall Civil War Museum, also known as the Confederate Museum, is the oldest operating museum in Louisiana. The Louisiana Historical Association built the museum in 1891 as a repository for war records, artifacts and memorabilia of the Civil War. A large Columbiad cannon (circa 1865) mounted on the front terrace welcomes visitors. The Confederate Museum is located steps away from the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the National D-Day Museum and the Contemporary Arts Center. The Memorial Hall Museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission prices are $5 for adults, $4 for students, seniors and active military, and $2 for children ages 2 to 12. The New Orleans Arts District is located in the historic American Sector, close to the Mississippi River and world famous French Quarter. The renaissance of this area began with the 1984 World's Fair and, today, is a thriving neighborhood of 16 art galleries, 5 world-class museums and restaurants, shops and private residences. The New Orleans Convention Center and Louisiana Superdome are just a short walk from the Arts District.  Art walks are held the first Saturday evening of each month. Special events such as "White Linen Night" and "Jammin' on Julia" are annual street parties in true New Orleans' fashion with art, music and food. As a designated Louisiana Cultural District, there is no sales tax charged on any original works of art sold in the Arts District!
